What happens next?

Ash Parish Council are entitled to submit a Highway Improvement Plan to the highways authority – Kent County Council – once per year. Survey responses will be analysed and discussed by Councillors at the Parish Council meeting on Thursday 5 November.

A list will be created of a maximum of 3 potential highway improvements, in priority order. These priorities will then be discussed with Kent County Council who have the final say on whether any suggestions for highway improvements are acceptable.

What will this achieve?  You said, we responded…

Previous Highways Improvement Plans have led to the following outcomes:

Speeding in the village

Following a public consultation to seek residents’ views on a 20mph limit in the village centre, the Parish Council requested KCC look at implementing this. KCC identified the roads that would be appropriate and carried out a Traffic Regulation Order to confirm residents’ views.  The result of this is that KCC have confirmed that a 20mph limit would be permitted. The Parish Council are now awaiting notification of the costs from KCC so that we can move this project forwards.

Traffic congestion at Pound Corner

The Parish Council have raised the issues residents face at this busy junction which includes narrow roads with on street parking, bus stops and the entrance to The Street car park. The Parish Council are pressing KCC to take action to help our residents. After considering various options KCC have suggested “KEEP CLEAR” markings to be painted on The Street at the Pound Corner junction.  The Parish Council was unhappy with this proposal because this road marking would be advisory only and not enforceable.  Further engagement has been undertaken with Dover District Council regarding on and off street parking in this area and work is ongoing to explore ways to help improve traffic congestion at Pound Corner.

Addressing Safety Issues of the A257

Residents raised concerns about the dangers of crossing the A257 on foot with several footpaths crossing this busy road. The Parish Council has paid £5,000 for the installation of Pedestrian Warning Signs on the A257 at several locations. We are waiting for KCC to carry out this work which has been delayed by their change of highways contractor.

In addition the Parish Council is an active member of the A257 Traffic Group which is a pressure group made up of other local Parish Councils, Dover District Councillors and Sir Roger Gale MP.

The A257 Traffic Group is requesting KCC make safety improvements on The A257 Roman Road, through the hamlet of Shatterling and on the Ash Bypass to improve safety for everyone living, working, walking, cycling, riding and driving on this road:

  • 50mph speed limit on the Ash bypass;
  • 40mph speed limit in the hamlet of Shatterling;
  • central double white lines on the Roman Road
  • enforcement of the speed limits

A petition has recently been sent to KCC and we await next steps.
