Biodiversity in the parish is important for our well-being and our wild-life.
Here are some suggestions to help over the spring months
With conversions of buildings and modern building practices, there are fewer places for birds to nest, so providing nests within your garden can help the birds find new homes.
It is also very enjoyable for you to watch birds nesting and hopefully, fledging young.
Birds nest in different places
Look and see which birds visit your garden. When putting up nesting boxes make sure the holes are the correct size for those birds that come to your garden.
Feeding birds
You need to use a feeder for the food suitable for the birds that are your visitors. Remember not all birds use a feeder – some are ground feeders and to reduce risk of rats you can use a bird table. You do need to clean all feeders regularly.

Biodiversity in the parish is important for our well-being and our wild-life.
Here are some suggestions to help over the winter months
- Leave a patch of long grass to encourage a damp area with cover like a piece of wood for toads to hibernate over winter.
- Leave dead flower heads and stalks for insects to hibernate in.
- Feed the birds, provide a shallow container of water for drinking and bathing.
- If you are thinking of putting fencing in this autumn / winter THINK hedgehogs. Hedgehogs are an endangered species we have lost 97% since the 1950’s. Use hedgehog friendly fencing, see https://www.hedgehogstreet.org/hedgehog-friendly-fencing/ for further details.
