Ash Heritage Centre – web-site

The local historical archive is based at the Ash Village Hall, Queen’s Road, Ash. The Centre archives old photographs and artefacts and you are welcome to visit to view them.  The Centre is open every Saturday 10am – 12 noon.  The Centre organises two talks a year on a Thursday evening, as well as exhibitions and heritage walks.  Visitors are always welcome.

Dear Resident
Every year throughout the spring and summer KCC Highways & Transportation receive numerous complaints regarding trees, hedges and other vegetation, which overhang the highway from private property. This matter can pose a number of problems for people trying to use the footways, especially if they are trying to pass with buggies, wheel chairs and scooters.  It would be greatly appreciated if you could ensure that any trees and hedges that are bordering the Highway are maintained and cut back to your boundary which would greatly benefit all Highway users. This will help us all keep the highway safe and prevent the need for KCC Highways & Transportation writing to you requesting that you cut back your vegetation.
So that you are aware of our requirements, please see the following points.
If the boundary of your property borders the footway, then please be aware that:
– The full width of the footway/pavement must be available for use by pedestrians.
– As well, there must be a minimum height clearance over the footway/pavement of 2.1 metres / 7 feet for any vegetation.
If the boundary of your property borders the carriageway, then please be aware that:
– If you have vegetation that overhangs into the road, there must be a minimum height clearance of 5 metres / 16 feet, to accommodate buses and HGV’s that may use the road.
–  If your property is rural, then vegetation should be 0.45 metres / 1’6” feet behind the edge of the road and all signs need to be kept clear of foliage for at least 20 metres.
Also, I would ask that you pay special attention to your trees, hedges and vegetation if your property is on or near a junction, and/or inside bend of the road, to maintain maximum visibility for road users.

At the recent Dover District Council Cabinet meeting held on Monday 15th January 2018, it was decided to consult with the four rural Parish Councils on whether or not to introduce parking charges at the Dover District Council Car Parks in Ash (The Street), Eastry, St Margaret’s at Cliffe and Wingham.

Ash Parish Councillors and Ash residents had strong objections to the introduction of the proposed charges of 50p per hour, 9am to 5pm, Monday to Sunday.

After the meeting, the DDC Councillors for Ash explained that the Cabinet had listened and acted on the representations that the DDC Councillors from the rural parishes had made regarding the proposal to introduce a charge for the village car parks in Ash (the Street) and in Wingham, also Eastry and St Margaret’s.  That proposal was dropped from the decisions made on Monday 15th January, to enable the District Council to consult and work with parishes to find the best solution(s) to the difficult issue of parking in the village centres. Particular mention was made of ensuring that support for local business continued and the importance of safe walking routes to schools.

When the consultation is started, the Ash Parish Council will let residents, local businesses and organisations know so that their views can be given to the Dover District Council.
